Laura Hughes - Untitled #14 from The Blue Series
Artwork Description
Laura Hughes
Laura Hughes descends from a long line of women artists. Her grandmother was a painter and her mother-- a ceramicist and performance artist. Initially, Hughes moved to New York to pursue a career in fashion. She found success as a producer and casting director. Inspired by the creativity around her, she began experimenting with a Polaroid SX70 Land Camera. The resulting images were highly saturated and surreal. They caught the eye of a gallerist who curated her first solo show in 2001. Wanting to push her process further, she experimented with digital video in conjunction with her polaroid work. These images formed her flower and surveillance series. Hughes has had both solo and group shows all over the world including: New York, North Carolina, Texas, Caracas, and Berlin. Her work is part of the Polaroid Collection, the SONS Museum, and she's appeared in various publications including an artist profile in Eyemazing Magazine. Hughes was the recipient of Polaroid Artist Support Grants from 2003-2006.
