Robin Sherin

I'm a native of Brooklyn, New York and currently live and work in New York City. A works on paper artist, my studio practice encompasses prints (etchings and monotypes) and drawings (an amalgam of cut paper and a variety of drawing media). My cityscapes begin as thumbnails in a notebook distilled from my urban environs, either remembered or photographed, altered or fabricated. Sifting through these suggestions, I choose which to develop into finished work. While exploring the boundaries between representation and abstraction, I invent a nominal architecture evoking a spare, unpeopled world of daunting structures. Form and content engage in dialogue where each becomes the other’s referent, but the conversation ends in discomforting stillness. Images entice using strong composition, but their buildings and walls offer no ingress or egress and exude alienation, isolation and loneliness. Recent exhibits include New Prints 2010/Spring, International Print Center, New York, New York; Preparations: Artists’ Sketchbooks and Journals, The College at Brockport, State University of New York, Brockport, New York and Neo-Constructivism: Art, Architecture & Activism, Paul Robeson Galleries, Rutgers, State University of New Jersey, Newark, New Jersey. My work is in private and public collections such as The New York Public Library, New York, New York; Muscarelle Museum of Art, College of William & Mary, Williamsburg, Virginia and Fidelity Investments, New York, New York.
