The 12 drawings that make up this series explore acts of faith in 3 parts: creation, representation, and trust. PART 1: Creation The drawings are created through an act of faith in one's ability: all images are drawn while the artist's eyes are closed, from a single line, the pen never leaving the page. PART 2: Representation The drawings are scanned into a computer as a vectorized file - an algorithmic representation of the image which can be output infinitely larger without loss of detail. After being output as digital prints each image file is broken down into its source code: a language specifically designed to facilitate the work of the computer in reproducing each image (think numbers, and lines of text akin to "{3 -1 roll put}bdf", etc). This code, sometimes upwards of 400+ pages of text, is printed and bound. The resulting book and the code it contains serves as the literal key to all future reproductions. PART 3: Trust In the final act all original drawings and all digital files are destroyed or deleted in the hope that these representations of a machine's interpretation of an original artwork are "enough." In the end there is but a single edition of each print, and a single edition of each book. By questioning the blind faith and trust we place in the machines to whom we daily pass ever increasing amounts of responsibility for our well being, our memories, our work, and our lives, the series asks if we are not too willingly rushing headlong toward the promise of tomorrow without first understanding all that implies.
Jason Covert - ...and with blind faith do we rush into the promise of tomorrow.
Artwork Description
Jason Covert
On the surface my work is varied in both message and medium, but deep within one will find a core that speaks to our culture's obsession with "the other."
From Warhol's early 60's fetishized Death and Disaster series to today's non-stop glut of reality tv programming we have embraced our "everyone love's a trainwreck" mentality with open arms. Seemingly it is better to look into the lives, loves and failings of someone else, someone other, than it is to look within. Traces of this can be found in every aspect of our society from our entertainment to our academic pursuits. My work serves as a lens through which the viewer's attention is focused on a subject of my choosing, but rather than scold I seek to serve by providing the viewer with that which I believe they desire, even if they don't yet know they want it.
The artist lives and works in Brooklyn, NY.
