Artwork Description

The Conversation Piece is part 1 of the installation series Social Paths, a political commentary borne from the idea of the perpetual motion “drinking bird” in relation to the overuse of non-renewable fossil fuels on the environment and the United States. Utilizing vintage clothing and plague masks to emulate “drinking bird” toys, the two human figures, which represent rival politics and different classes, are similarly feeding from and utilizing a form of fossil fuel to sustain their mobility with no success. In essence this catch 22 is a constant cycle of environmental destruction. The plague masks act both as a disguise attempting to fool the wood stork represented by recycled materials as well as a testament to the fallacy the two figures represent.

XAVIER FIGUEROA

I have very clear memories, but my goal is to recreate particular moments in time, both past and present, attached to specific emotions. I’m interested in the perception and deception of these memories and how a person views and recounts them as well. Depicted in a series of three parts, the installations are displayed individually during the span of a year connecting to the season during which it’s being shown. Giving each installation a time frame, their materials ultimately get recycled into the other parts of the series, allowing the materials to continue living beyond their original conception, a tribute to memory in and of itself. Although the details are brought into play in the memories I recreate, the overall piece is depicted as a geometric line drawing. Different types of illumination play a key role in the installation’s ambience alluding to a cinematic and ethereal quality. Experiences in architecture, carpentry and set design help me reinvent spaces into multi-media installations. I seek objects relative to the memory’s location and time. Sometimes I use actual objects; other times, I recreate them. In essence, the installations are memories of memories…echoes of what once was.
