Artwork Description

TRIUMPH OF THE XX, 2007-2009 DVD “Triumph of the XX” evokes the passion of the XX chromosome (female) in its ability to heal a flaw or mutation in the DNA by recombining and backing up since there are two X’s. A red haired woman is the metaphor for this concept, as she recombines the genes of the world by making love with men of various ethnic backgrounds, thereby healing division. Aluminum foil, a simple substrate found in the kitchen and commonly used by women for domestic labor, is elevated, along with this concept, to an articulation of the divine.

The xx chromosome backs itself up by having two x's so if there is a mutation on one x, the healthy x will not allow the mutation to be expressed. For instance in color blindness in the male XY chromosome, the mutation for this is usually on the x chromosome and since the male XY (the Y) cannot overcompensate for this flaw on the X, males will get colorblindness. As for having children or mixing races and healing division - The inherently strong XX chromosome, as a metaphor for female strength and healing, can mix races through meiosis. How can we kill one another in divisive ethnic, religious wars if we share children? That is the concept behind this series.

If division is an inherent flaw, something that need be healed, how are all proposed cures effected through mitosis and difference?

(Incidentally, this might be my favorite piece this year. But that's besides the point.)
