Artwork Description

The piece that I have entered interprets Cherokee Seneca Park in Louisville, KY. When one views trees in a park setting the trees have a “pattern like” quality about them because of their similarity. Only a sophisticated eye can spot the difference between them. Biography Beryl Brenner's career as an artist has taken a series of interesting turns. After obtaining her BA in fine arts and her MA in art-ed. from Brooklyn College, she explored a wide variety of art media, including painting, wood sculpture, metal works, photography, and clay. Originally, she was known for the wood sculpture that she exhibited and but has she has worked in glass in recent years. She has completed the stained glass for Our Lady of Guadeloupe Church in Danbury, Ct. and Congregation Beth Shalom Synagogue in Atlanta, Ga. In the Spring of 2000, she began utilizing the studio at Urban Glass in Brooklyn, New York to produce her recent experimental work in fused glass. In addition to having had 6 one woman shows and countless group shows, Ms. Brenner’s works have been shown all over the country. In the winter of 2008 she displayed her work with the NCGAA at AnnMarie Gardens, a SMITHSONIAN AFFILIATE in Maryland. Artist Statement I am a New York artist and I have been working on a series of art pieces that I have created based on Frederick Law Olmsted’s work. Essentially, these are thematic interpretations. Even though he had no previous professional experience, Olmsted was instrumental in designing Central Park. Olmsted spent a number of years living on Staten Island and engaging in what he referred to as scientific farming experiments. These experiments would be the the precursor to many of the other parks in New York City. After Olmsted received this commission he went on to design many of the major parks or park systems in cities and towns throughout North America, whole communities, numerous prestigious universities, many prominent cemeteries, prominent hospital grounds, the US capital grounds and the landscape surrounding Niagara, and the famous Vanderbilt Estate Biltmore in Ashville, NC. His influence impacted upon the National Parks movement. Olmsted could be considered to be America’s original environmentalist. In some cities, including New York, there would be almost no greenery but for Olmsted’s work. His work was the precursor of the National Parks Movement in America which later spawned National Parks Movements in many other places on earth. Frederick Law Olmsted is referred to as the Father of Landscape Architecture. The artworks that I have produced attempt to pay homage to his inventiveness and creativity. He did things that had never been done before because he had great vision. The works are made of fused glass and mixed media pieces. They combine a variety of dynamic, intriguing paper samples as well as some drawing. The fused glass is a special type of glass melted at very high temperatures so that the glass pieces may fuse together.
