This painting is a landscape, although it's also a kind of optical abstraction. The title is "Late" because I was thinking about the time of day when the light fails- were things start to flicker when not seen straight on, and radio towers get confused with trees. The hand-painted circular marks are part of what makes the image vibrate. They also contribute a presence and rich texture that wouldn't be there if it was made some other way.
Randall Stoltzfus - Late
Artwork Description
Randall Stoltzfus
When I moved to Brooklyn from Virginia I started making these dark landscape paintings lit in strange ways. At first the paintings were usually of something burning. Maybe something from the past. Now there is often something backlit, or overwhelmed by light. And there is more and more texture. Now the paintings have begun to make light from texture, something I've learned from watching the way glare and surface work in the city around me. Brooklyn, with its dark heart, and my memory of the south combine to provide rich shadows.
