Artwork Description

'SCHOOL LUNCH/PERSUASION', 40"x 60", oil on canvas, is an image derived from drawings created on a NYC Public Art Grant I received through ABACA and NYSFA at Satellite Academy, an alternative High School, on Manhattan's Lower East Side. My experience at this school allowed me access to classrooms, as well as, a broad range of school activities, where I interacted with students. I draw each student's image separately, over a ten - fifteen minute time-frame, while engaging the student in conversation. I created over fifty drawings, at this site, which were curated by the students. Several drawings were exhibited at Artist Space at the culmination of this project. As with all my SCHOOL LUNCH images, back in my studio, I review my drawings, consider the students, the context of the situations, my interactions and develop compositions that reflect the experience.

The SCHOOL LUNCH painting series is a visual essay of contemporary student life, in real educational settings. Contemporary cross-cultural issues and their emotional attitudes are explored in the shared experience of school lunch. SCHOOL LUNCH is generated from direct observation, drawing on location, afternoons in lunchrooms of NYC High Schools, Colleges and Universities. Weinblatt's images have been featured on the cover announcements twice for Nabisco Foods Gallery's exhibition "Faces of America: Celebrating Diversity and Multi-Culturalism & Black History Month". Weinblatt has a MFA from The School of Visual Arts, NYC and a BA, Magna Cum Laude, Art Department Honors, Queens College, CUNY. SCHOOL LUNCH has had recent solo exhibitions at The Woodstock Museum of Art, NY, The Morris Graves Museum,CA, The Karpeles Museum, NY and The Seldon Atrium Gallery, City of Norfolk, VA. Weinblatt has exhibited in over 40 solo exhibitions across the USA, in over 200 group exhibits, has been awarded 6 A-I-R residencies, and a NYC Public Art Grant through ABACA at Satellite Academy on the Lower East Side,to interact & draw students in school. Stephanie H.Plunkett, Chief Curator of the Norman Rockwell Museum comments "Weinblatt's ability to transform specific experiences into powerful images which communicate to a broad audience is nothing short of extraordinary...remarkable paintings that address such important issues as cultural identity and the challenges inherent in interpersonal relationships." SCHOOL LUNCH underlines perceptions which affirm cultural identity, brings together ideas espousing contemporary concerns and encourages a belief in the quality human spirit.
