Daniel Derwelis

Born in Albuquerque, NM. Lives and works in Brooklyn, NY. Education: MFA in Painting and Drawing, School of the Art Institute of Chicago. BFA in Sculpture, University of Texas at Austin. Recent Exhibitions: "@DekaLb", Botanic Gallery, Brooklyn, Oct 2011, curated by Paul Nicholson. "Boxed In and Out", BETA Spaces 2010, Brooklyn, Nov 2010, curated by Mark Weathers. "Bushwick Local", 369 Harman, Brooklyn, Apr 2010, curated by Sadie Flateman. Statement: My recent paintings bring to life moments of narratives with a mixture of landscape and figuration. The images are from my own stories. I have always been interested in work that has an element of strangeness, where real and surreal can overlap and mingle. I begin with writing, which develops into sketches, drawings, and paintings. My intention is to come up with an interesting narrative, image, and paint surface. Ideally the paintings reach a point where they begin to ask for things and they dictate their own outcome, which helps to keep a feeling of freshness and spontaneity in the work.
