Bill Claps - Tropic of Cancer
Artwork Description
Bill Claps
The human form is the primary inspiration and starting point for my paintings and drawings, which explore the intersection of representation and abstraction. The line is essential, and its path through the work tells a story and evokes a mood. For me, the true essence of a subject is best channeled by tapping into the instinctual and subconscious. Immediacy and gesture are very important components – and this is expressed in the quality of my lines and brush strokes. As my paintings and drawings evolve, they take on a certain life of their own, at which point I facilitate the process and act as an arbitrator, deciding which structural elements deserve more or less prominence. Bill Claps’ paintings and drawings have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in galleries and cultural centers including Aspen Fine Arts Gallery in Aspen, Colorado, Kismet Gallery in Westport, Connecticut, and Bendheim Gallery in Greenwich, Connecticut. In New York City his work has been shown at Salomon Arts Gallery, Priska C. Juschka Fine Art, 14th Street Gallery, Henry Gregg Gallery, and M55 Gallery
