Matthew Grabelsky

A native New Yorker, I grew up surrounded by artists. In college I studied astrophysics, which taught me how to observe the world, and art, which allowed me to express my relationship to it. After graduating from Rice University in 2002 with both a BA in Art and Art History and a BS in Astrophysics I moved to Florence, Italy where I spent four years studying the techniques of classical drawing and painting. Since completion of my studies in 2006 I have focused on creating paintings that combine the world that I see around me everyday with imagery taken from mythology and dreams. My work is not meant to be taken as fantasy or as allegory but rather as a blending of our every day experiences with our subconscious. My paintings are meant to be enigmatic and to create dream like worlds that engage the viewer so that he or she creates their own personal interpretation of the imagery presented.
