Erik Sommer - Sala
Artwork Description
Erik Sommer
I paint. My work is about time, beauty, chance and control. Of these time is the most apparent although not the most important. I attempt to capture and control time, and its passing, in order to preserve it. I allude to the process of aging by recreating the weathering of surface due to age, rain or sun in a way that appears to have happened naturally or accidentally. Painterly marks are left off each piece. New York City interests my seeing, learning and noticing- its urban grittiness, sidewalks, decaying buildings, stucco, the splotches of cement in the neighborhood of my studio. My work is a reflection on mortality. My work is a statement on the beauty within the old and the cracked, the decayed and discarded. I paint the effects of tomorrow.
