This image represents one in a series entitled, "The 38th Parallel." The 38th Parallel is also known as the DMZ, the DeMilitarized Zone, a political and geographic line which divides North and South Korea. The viewfinders are positioned for tourists to see what lies beyond this heavily guarded border, into a country that remains unilluminated and removed from the rest of the world. This particular day did not favor viewing long distances - the understanding of their culture and lifestyle continues to be similarly enshrouded.

Artwork Description
Sue Rissberger
I am a visual storyteller. My work contextualizes ideas that affect us all with images rooted in social documentary and fine art photography. I believe we possess stories that can impart wisdom into the world and encourage peaceful societies to exist, and I look to photograph the psychological and cultural components of the human condition in this process. It is my hope we can learn something from this. The images I produce are visual cues that aim to generate questions and inspire the observer to cogitate on broader concepts of home, identity, race and culture. The visual stories that emerge as a result are meant to be a source for dialogue where modern thought can be discussed and challenged, and where conversations can evolve as cultures change.
