A Revolution in Etiquette: Connoisseurs of Swag details the Dandy Lion phenomena that has made its way back into the American mainstream among African-American men. Unlike the European Dandy, the new-age African American Dandy has infused the aesthetic with a swag that is traditionally African. The detailed-oriented approach to styling demonstrates the absolute impeccable nature that Dandies portray. Tailored, timeless and a lifestyle that personifies swag, this photograph is meant to depict, "A Revolution in Etiquette."
Hanif Abdur-Rahim - A Revolution in Etiquette: Connoisseurs of Swag
Artwork Description
Hanif Abdur-Rahim
A science major and graduate of the George Washington University, Hanif, although educated and grounded in the academic physical sciences, gravitated from the sciences to the arts constantly. From early in his childhood, he was mesmerized with the power of the still image and visual arts in general. Hanif’s journey from medicine to becoming a full-time photographer took root as he would photograph musical artists such as: All Time Low, Raheem Devaughn, Wayna, Common, Mos Def, Talib Kweli and many others. A self-taught photographer and graphic artist, Hanif would eventually form his own company in 2004 and pursue the world of visual arts full-time. His list of clients covers all genres of photography. He routinely tests with fashion models from the top agencies, such as Elite Model Management, Major Model Management and Ford Model Management to name a few. He has landed deals with major agencies with his fashion cinematography work. His fine art work has appeared globally and been awarded top honors. Hanif's fine art work is currently on view at Aljira, a Center for Contemporary Art, in New Jersey until December 22nd, 2011. The work on view is part of the internationally-acclaimed exhibition entitled: Dandy Lion: Articulating a Re(de)fined Black Masculine Identity. Hanif has traveled extensively around the world from the USA to Japan, to the Middle East photographing subjects and places. Photography is the medium that he utilizes to freeze time and make the world take notice. Hanif's mission is to prove impossible doesn't exist. He currently resides in Brooklyn, NY but travels globally for commercial, fashion and photojournalistic photographic assignments.
