Artwork Description
Atisha
Atisha Paulson’s photography marries the intimacy of Nan Goldin’s portraits and the poignancy of Henri Cartier-Bresson’s decisive moments. While his photographs are candid, the subjects do not feel voyeuristically intruded on or observed but seem to be in communication with the viewer. His presence can be felt in the openness of his subjects- in their unfettered poses and the naturalness of each shot you are able to travel with him through personal moments where it doesn’t seem possible that a camera was even present. His ability to capture the decisive moment makes this even more powerful as you are not only given access to private worlds, but you are there just as the wave is cresting, as the smile is cracking, as every face in the room turns towards a figure passing. The accuracy with which he captures these perfect moments furthers the sense that you are witness to something important happening in the most ordinary circumstances-with a color, a gesture, a look, an implied ommision in the frame he highlights the extraordinary in the every day.
