Artwork Description

Dance Hall was created with The Bermuda Squad (a dancehall dancer group), that supports youth through dance to stay out of gangs and the gun violence in Bermuda. Bermuda Squad was created by Taylor Made, a dancehall dancer that was born and raised in Brooklyn and now lives in Bermuda. With my Dubbed photography series, I look to capture beyond the movements, embodying the essence of dancer and the power of their light bodies communicating with the universe. With my Dance Hall Dubbed Series, there is a shamanic quality that illuminates: the power of men sharing knowledge and guiding youth through difficulty to find their own creative power and identity.

Kathleena Howie-Garcia/LadyK Fever

Kathleena Howie-Garcia (Lady K-Fever) is a New York City based multi-disciplinary Visual Artist. She began her journey as a Visual artist in the early 1990’s while studying theatre & film at Gastown Actor’s Studio/University of British Columbia. She is the first Canadian woman invited to paint at the legendary Harlem Graffiti Hall of Fame in 2003 and 2004. Her work is featured in the books Graffiti woman and Burning New York. She has taken on the role as a curator to create exhibitions for The Bronx Museums Project space and The Aurora Gallery. In 2011, she collaborated with Nicolas Dumit Estevez for the exhibition “Born Again” at Longwood Art Gallery and was the Artist in residence at Masterworks Museum of Bermudian Art, creating a solo exhibition and community based public art. Dubbed is the dialogue inspiring her visual expressions; using a raw image and dubbing it through experimentations with mediums and materials into a reverberating surreal and ethereal world manifested into lines, layers, and colors conjuring up emotions, memories, past, present and future. Nature is spliced with urban vernacular as well as dancehall dancers are transcending into a ritualistic world of shaman and spiritual enlightenment.
