Artwork Description

This image is one of approximately 30 images in my series Isolation. It was taken in 2010 in a diner in New Jersey.

Throughout the scope of my work, I have tried to visually express what it means to be an individual human. This experience is vastly different for each of us and there are so many small instances that make up our lives. How we deal with these experiences forms the whole of whom we are. Lately, I’ve been drawn to the feeling of isolation, of not feeling interconnected with the rest of the world. I have been photographing a young girl mannequin in various locations to conjure up this feeling. Using the mannequin, instead of a person, helps to keep the subject neutral so that her placement and pose as well as the lighting and setting convey the mood of these images. I also use a portable strobe that slightly sculpts her out from her surroundings. I believe the resulting images are undeniably haunting and eerie.
