Conrad Vogel May, 9, 2008 Artist's Statement: I work in painting on paper and digital pigment prints . My work is figurative. I examine War, love, frailty and absurd humor as it intrudes upon the daily interaction of ordinary humans and anthropomorphic creatures of the land and sea . In my paintings I create scenes in which my characters strut and fret their hour upon my stage, allowing the viewer to engage in a playful conversation with what is being developed before them . The works are meant to be entertaining at first viewing, using lively brush drawing and high childlike irrational color. But beneath these visual treats, the viewer will find darker meanings in the images presented. My work uses aspects of Literature, History, early Renaissance painting, 19th century American painting and Japanese Zen brush drawing.
