BRANCH IX is part of a series of works made from scavenged tree branches and reeds that are stripped of bark, sanded, drilled, glued together and painted with acrylic paints. The works are derived from an exploration of the growth patterns of tree and the resulting development of a personal system of branching.

Artwork Description
Barbara Korman
Storm felled trees. Sprawling vines. Bent branches. This is where it begins for me. An awareness, usually informed by nature, juiced by some inner sympathies and often defying explanation. It becomes fuel for that internal process that is the mystery and pleasure of doing the work. A practicing artist, I am also an avid naturalist and environmentalist. For the last three years, I have been working with scavenged, discarded natural materials such as, logs, branches and twigs. They are stripped of bark, painted with washes of color and reanimated in the studio to create discrete objects and installations. These forms, which suggest scorched plants, and withered trees, are deliberately suspended between reference to and embodiment of a natural world under siege. These works reconnect me with myself and they become the receptacle for old and new thoughts and perspectives about nature, art and everything in between.
