Artwork Description

Multicolor Grenade (Yellow, Red and Blue) belongs to the COMFORT project, a series of soft sculptures which serve as “safety blankets” in violent climates. Depicting police and army paraphernalia, each sculpture is built life-size out of poly-fill and fabrics—Kairé's grandfathers' first economic resource when arriving in the “New World”— including velvet and silk. They're intended to be caressed and cuddled with, transforming sculpture into a therapeutical experience. This project responds to the recurring violations of Guatemalan citizens and denounces—with a touch of humor—the country's conflicted situation. Furthermore, as a result of Kairé's relocation to New York, the project has accrued new meanings and symbolism; in this new context it questions the double-standards of global politics and international conflicts.
