Beuys Pallet is part of my ongoing series of work that immerses photographic imagery within found objects. The shipping pallets serve as a frame for displaying this iconic photograph of the German artist Joseph Beuys. The image of Beuys in stacked shipping pallets speaks to his universal influence as well as the concept of artist as laborer. The used pallets were purchased from a shipping yard in Williamsburg. Using Photoshop, the appropriated photograph of Beuys was enlarged to life size and printed out on photo transparencies in 30 individual sections. Custom cut plexiglass encases each photo transparency. The piece itself is not back-lit but is altered with the natural or electronic light it receives while on display.

Artwork Description
Ryan Frank
Ryan Frank is an artist and curator based in Brooklyn, NY. For the past two summers he's been an artist-in-residence at the Wassaic Project and has exhibited his artwork and projects at several venues including Recession Art, the Invisible Dog Art Center, DUMBO Art Under the Bridge Festival, and Chashama. As a curator he recently organized the exhibitions Ode Hotel at the Wassaic Project and Used Books at Winkleman Gallery Curatorial Research Lab. From 2006-2009 he organized a series of pop-up exhibitions throughout NYC with the curatorial collective Ad Nauseam Lyceum, which he co-founded. Beuys Pallet is part of my ongoing series of work that immerses photographic imagery within found objects. The shipping pallets serve as a frame for displaying this iconic photograph of the German artist Joseph Beuys. The image of Beuys in shipping pallets speaks to his universal influence as well as the concept of artist as laborer. These pallets, much like Beuys’ ideas of art, have traveled the world for different purposes yet are united and interchangeable in their uniformity.
